Chelation Therapy employs the use of special compounds given intravenously to remove unwanted elements from the blood. Typically, Chelation is used to remove toxic levels of heavy metals (such as mercury or lead), however in recent decades, some alternative medical practitioners have promoted Chelation for the treatment of cardiovascular disease based on the assumption that certain chelating agents remove the calcium from arterial plaque and thereby open-up arterial walls. In addition to this auxiliary use, some practitioners promote Chelation for treating Autism and other neurological disorders, believing in a correlation with heavy-metal toxicity.
